Eureka! After years of searching for the perfect burger, it just so happens to be tucked behind a petrol station in Rosebank.  Who would have thought? I first heard of BGR earlier this year during a load shed. My neighbours and I were thinking of places to go and get food and one of them suggested this place, but we were all too lazy to drive from Yeoville to Rosebank.  My friend had many good things to say about it but after tasting these, I feel like he totally underestimated it.  I first tried it a couple of weeks ago when I was in low spirits, snowed under with work.  During a work break, I remembered it and drove to the Caltex Garage on the corner of Jan Smuts and Jellicoe to give it a try.  I got there, there were no customers and I ordered a cheeseburger with their barbecue sauce, mayo, mushrooms, lettuce and tomatoes. You can pick your own toppings that go with the hand rolled free range beef patties.  I know this because I saw the butcher’s delivery truck while I was waiting for my order and it was from Braeside, as far as I know, one of the best butcheries in Johannesburg. Everything about the experience was simple, from ordering to the presentation.  I only had a cheese burger and a freshly squeezed lemonade and the tastes stayed with me for days. I make my own burgers because I’ve never found any joy in the burgers that Joburg restaurants make, nor have I found an amazing one in Cape Town, although Hudsons comes close.  I didn’t like the burgers I tasted in New York but I did relish in London’s Byron Burger – those people get it, and so do these ones shem.  Yesterday I went with a friend and we ordered chips with our burgers.  Those also win and we got free lemonade because they are trying a new recipe.  The shop is owned by Americans, which was pretty obvious from the set up of the store and the dedication to the dining experience. Tomato sauce is called Ketchup and chips are called Fries and of course, the lemonade. I don’t know what else to say besides just go there.  They don’t have a veg burger although we suggested it to them yesterday and they seemed receptive. They’ve been open for 6 months and in the coming months are going to move upstairs from where they currently are.
