Nola Darling. Remember that name because if there’s an unsung black feminist heroine, it is this enigmatic fictional creation whom many of us either didn’t understand when we watched Spike Lee’s film She’s Gotta Have It when we were kids, or none of us, unfortunately know about in our adulthood. Nola Darling is the name of a character played by Tracy Camilla Johns in Spike Lee’s 1986 very underrated film She’s Gotta Have It.
The Feminist Stokvel is trying to find the screening rights to this brilliant film for our next screening which we wanted to be next weekend but we’ve tried with no luck to get a response from 40 Acres and a Mule, Spike Lee’s production company. If anybody has a clue as to who has the rights to screen this in South Africa for a free public screening, please get in touch with me email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are not going to give up because the discussion that will follow after watching a circa 1986 beautiful black woman own her body and sexuality is going to be unmissable.
