The world would certainly be a little less cool if Maria McCloy wasn’t around to show us sedentary folk (at least in terms of how she is able to access every corner and crevice of Joburg in search of sartorial treats) what to buy. I bought these locally produced rubber mbadada’s from her yesterday and have been wearing them all day today – super comfortable and at just R250, they are super affordable. These shoes, made from repurposed tyers, have been part of the Joburg cultural landscape for ages but I haven’t been to the muti haven, the Mai Mai Market, where they have been popularized, in years. If you want your own, visit Market on Main on Sundays or you can follow @mariamccloy on Instagram or simply mail her firstname.lastname@example.org if you can’t wait till Sunday. She has loads of other cool stuff in her traveling shop.
