Tjo na we ma! Africa said she’d be back people! Naba aBantu bakhe. These beautiful portraits of beautiful people were taken by artist Awol Erizku at the Afropunk Festival in New York recently. I mean! This is just a bite, the rest of the sandwich is here. The more time I spend working on this hair film, the more inspired I feel. Awol’s other work (born in Ethiopia in frikkin 1988) is also pretty impressive. Inspired by greats like Rembrand, he remasters the classics by photographing black people in well known postures, thus placing them in those histories and the great artists in the now. This work, like the people photographed at Afropunk, is compelling. Don’t forget to click on the link above to see more of the images.
